VO2 max (or maximal oxygen consumption) is a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during exercise.
A VO2 max test, is a graded exercise test performed under controlled conditions to measure an individual's VO2 max. During the test, the person exercises on a treadmill or stationary bicycle while the intensity of the exercise gradually increases. The person wears a mask or a mouthpiece connected to a specialized machine that analyzes the amount of oxygen they breathe in and the amount of carbon dioxide they breathe out. By measuring the difference in oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the inhaled and exhaled air, the testing equipment can calculate the individual's VO2 max. Typically, a test lasts between 7 to 15 minutes.
